So here’s the one thing that they never really say on Apple ’s (AAPL) brilliant, “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” ads: at a basic level, a Mac actually IS a PC. A spiffier looking PC, sure, and a PC that runs a more appealing operating system, but still at the end of the day it is box with a screen and chips inside and a keyboard and software used to do work and connect to the Internet.
I say this not to start a philosophical discussion about which is better, but only as prelude to noting a research piece by Credit Suisse’s Bill Shope , who today cut FY 2009 estimates on Apple to reflect his firm’s new, lower outlook for PC unit demand. Credit Suisse now sees 2009 PC units down 4.7%; previously, they had been looking for 4.9% unit growth. (He also cut numbers today on Dell .)
As part of that move, Shope cut his forecast for Mac unit sales for the September 2009 fiscal year to 9.138 million, from 9.573 million. For the December quarter, he now sees ...
