Apple: Rumor They Will Sell $99 4GB iPhone Via Wal-Mart

Now here’s an interesting rumor. The blog Boy Genius Report says it has received a tip that Apple will sell a 4 GB iPhone in Wal-Mart for $99 with a 2-year service agreement. Apple doesn’t currently sell a 4GB iPhone; the 8 GB model is $199 with a 2-year service plan, while the 16 GB model sells for $299. The same blog had previously reported that Apple will start selling phones in Wal-Mart later this month; but the new details make the concept all the more fascinating. (Although not yet confirmed by either side, I should add.) The idea raises all sorts of interesting questions: would ever-brand-conscious Apple actually sell a low-end phone specifically to be sold at Wal-Mart and not its own stores or other retailers? Would a $99 phone with 4GB of memory eat in to sales of higher priced models with more memory? And would it get a special name, like the iPhone Recession Edition? Apple today is down $3.25, or 3.4%, to $92.65. Previously: Apple: Report Wal-Mart To Sell ... (link)
