Blu-ray rockets in December

Going high-def was high on our Christmas lists as sales of Blu-ray movies rocketed in the UK during the last month of 2008. According to figures released by the British Video Association (BVA), sales were up 400 per cent on the same period last year, with 1.5 million titles shifted in December, headed up by the Dark Knight, which shifted 281,000 copies during its first three weeks on sale. Mind you, with Argos knocking out players for under £100 and HD-ready TVs tumbling in price, it's no surprise to see a rush on the latest shiny discs. But let's throw in a bit of perspective. Around 3.7 million Blu-ray movies were sold in the UK last year, compared to 253 million DVDs sold in December alone, which means steady progress rather than overnight sensation. And we all know that there's only one real test of when Blu-ray has genuinely arrived - when your parents invest in a player.
