At first glance, it looks like the OptiPlex 160 is the next shot in the budget desktop battle. Well, in a way it is - only Dell is taking aim at the office.
Not a million miles away from the budget Eee Box desktop , the Dell offering packs the single-core Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, an 80GB hard drive, integrated video and Microsoft Vista into a 1.85-inch box. Not great for playing the pick of today's gaming greats, but perfectly good for banging out a few Word docs and some sneaky web browsing.
Unfortunately the price doesn't match up to Eee's offering at $563 (£376) and there's already a dual-core Atom version heading to market in 2009. Give it a consumer makeover and drop the price by £100+ too and this could well be a contender for more frugal times.
