IBM Sends Over 2,800 Layoff Notices, WSJ Reports

IBM has sent layoff notices to more than 2,800 people in its U.S. sales and software groups in the last week, according to the Wall Street Journal . According to the Journal, an IBM spokesman acknowledges that layoffs are underway but declined to common on the number of cuts. An “Employee Information Package” sent to affected workers last week listed 2,850 positions, without specifying names. The story noted that some eliminated jobs were tied to the sales team that handled troubled accounts such as now-bankrupt Circuit City (CC). There were reports last week that layoffs were underway, but IBM has not provided any detail. At the end of 2008, the company had over 400,000 employees. (link)
