Q1 Global PC Shipments Fell 8.1% From Year Ago
Worldwide PC shipments in the first quarter fell 8.1% from a year ago, or 14.4% from the fourth quarter level, according to new data from the research firm iSuppli . Desktop PCs were down 23% year over year, while notebooks grew 10%, thanks no doubt to the surge in demand for low cost netbook. According to iSuppli, netbooks will account for 14% of total PC shipments in 2009, up from 9% last year.
Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), which grew shipments by 0.4% in the quarter, was the market share leader, with 19.7%. Dell , despite an 18.7% decline in units shipped, was the number two supplier, with 13.2%. Acer , a big player in netbooks, saw a 9.5% increase in units in the quarter, giving it 11.1% of the market. Lenovo saw units fall 7.7%, and ranked fourth with 6.7% share. In the fifth slot, Toshiba ’s units rose 13.2%, to give it 5.2% of the world market.
