No doubt the networks will be less-than-pleased , but for iPhone owners, cheaper calls could be available very soon with the launch of Skype for iPhone.
Rumours suggest the launch of the app as soon as April 1st at the CTIA Wireless trade show, with availability soon after. How it will work isn't yet clear, but previous Skype apps for other handsets and operating systems have offered free messaging between contacts, along with discounted communication between Skype users and cut-price calls overseas. We'll presume the iPhone app isn't a million miles away from the mobile solutions offered previously.
The real savings are sure to be in the overseas calls, unless you hammer your inclusive O2 allowance each month. But the real benefit could be further down the line. Apple is rumoured to be launching a new iPhone with video recording . Combined with Skype, that could mean video calling on the move. Here's hoping.
