File this one under Amazing Japanese Tech That We Probably Won’t See For Ages. Sony has confirmed two Blu-ray Disc recorders which, apart from recording your favourite TV programs, can export the video to portable devices such as the Sony PSP or Walkman.
The 500GB Sony BDZ-A950 and 320GB BDZ-A750 can also call down extra content from Japan’s AcTVila video download service. This can be exported to compatible portable gadgets too.
Streaming and downloadable video services aren’t really anything new, but the ability to export that content to portable devices is a feature that has eluded almost every set-top box so far.
Although it’s been technically possible for eons, it’s presumably being held back by the tangled web of copyright issues that seem to cripple every effort to allow people to view their paid-for media however they damn well please.
