Sony XEL-1 OLED television review'

New television technology is hardly the stuff to ignite deep tech lust. But OLED is a breakthrough for the flatscreen TV industry, showcasing pictures far superior to anything you’ve seen from an LCD or Plasma, on an energy-saving panel just 3mm deep. Interested yet? Currently only available in Japan and the US, the 11in Sony XEL-1 we’re looking at is the first OLED television to hit the market, so specifications may vary slightly to UK samples we’re expecting early this year. With a resolution of 960x540, although can hook up a Blu-ray player or PS3 via HDMI, the XEL-1 is not actually high def. Not that it matters on a screen this small anyway and with a high contrast ratio (1,000,00:1), picture quality is simply breathtaking. It’s sharp and detailed, with vivid colours more in common with high-quality stills photos than TV. Murkier and inkier than any LCD and definitely rivalling Plasma, blacks are exceptional, although we’d have liked to compare larger panel ... (link)
