Twitter on the rise in the UK

Well, we all know Stephen Fry is a fan , but it seems he's not alone if new traffic figures are to be believed about Twitter. The micro-blogging platform has seen a sharp rise in use over the last 12 months, now standing at a respectable 291st in the Hitwise rankings, up from 2,953 12 months ago and showing a 974 per cent increase in traffic. And with high-profile users like Barack Obama twittering away, it shows no sign of fading away in the forseeable future. Indeed, the traffic could even be underestimated. Twitter isn't just a web phenomenon, it's a mobile one too, with purpose-built tools and applications for the likes of the iPhone and the BlackBerry allowing users to post updates wherever they might be. Throw all those 'I'm on a train' mobile messages into the mix and Twitter just might be on its way to giving Facebook a bloody nose in the near future. Unless we all find another web 2.0 bandwagon to jump onto in 2009, natch. Link: Twitter (link)
