Macworld.com - Though you may think us to be iPhone fans all the time, we really do want to root for the underdog.
RIMM: FTN Downgrades; Competitive Worries Spread

FTN Capital analyst Blaine Carroll today cut his rating on Research In Motion (RIMM) to Neutral from Buy, citing evidence that the company is losing market share in the U.S. smart phone market.
Carroll’s downgrade is in connection with his latest monthly survey of the U.S. smart phone market, in which he talked to 100 service reps at the four larges U.S. cellular operators. He RIMM was the best selling vendor, with about 44% market share in October, but notes that was down 10 percentage points from September. The falloff, he says, reflects a flurry of new entrants to the market. “Although we expected the company to see some pressure in our survey, the magnitude of the drop was greater than we originally thought,” he writes. “We feel that some high-end estimates may come down” in the months ahead.
Meanwhile, Pacific Crest analyst James Faucette writes today that there are mounting risks to his current forecast for RIMM’s February quarter of 10 million ...

Find more top gadget news, videos, and blogs on GadgetBlips: Phones, Verizon

Deutsche Telekom (DT) is looking for a partner for T-Mobile , its U.S. wireless unit, according to a story in the German newspaper Handelsblatt which was picked up by Reuters . Possible partners for the business reportedly include MetroPCS (PCS) , Clearwire (CLWR) and AT&T (T) , as well companies outside the industry. The story notes that Sony Ericsson had previously cut staffing at the site in half. Other Sony Ericsson sites expected to close, the N&O reports, include offices in Seattle, San Diego, Miami, India and Sweden. The company is moving its North American base to Atlanta.

The phone, which runs on Nokia’s Linux-based Maemo operating system, certainly is powerful, with 32 GB of storage, 3G, multi-tasking, 3.5-inch touchscreen, full QWERTY keyboard, Adobe Flash support, 5 MP camera, Carl Zeiss optics and various other technical goodies.
But without U.S. wireless carrier support, consumers face the prospect of an unsubsidized $649 retail price. So who is going to buy it?
NOK today is up 24 cents, or 1.8%, to $13.92.

Google Phone: Coming Soon?

An Android -based Google -branded (GOOG) smart phone should be on the market by early 2010, according to TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington.
Arrington writes in log post the phone will be sold directly and through retailers; the device will be built by a major phone manufacturer but have only Google branding. The piece contends that Google will completely control the design, and will be “Google’s pure vision of what a phone should be.”
The reprot says once source claims HTC is building the phone - but Arrington contends the source is wrong, and the company is actually working with a Korean manufacturer, either LG or Samsung . TechCrunch also reports that Google is planning big advertising push for the device, starting as early as January.
“That’s all we have for now,” Arrington writes. “We don’t yet know what the device will look like, how big it will be, or even if it has a physical keyboard. But we do know that Google is getting into the phone ...

Find more top gadget news, videos, and blogs on GadgetBlips: Phones, Android

InfoWorld - Palm has stayed very quiet since its releases of the Palm Pre and Pixi devices this summer, which debuted the WebOS that was at one point seen as a key rival to Apple's iPhone. Other than back-and-forth fights with Apple on the WebOS's ability to sync to iTunes, which Apple has repeatedly disabled, and an announcement that the WebOS SDK would finally be opened up to rank-and-file developers in December, Palm has declined to talk.

Find more top gadget news, videos, and blogs on GadgetBlips: Phones, Palm Pre

Research In Motion: BMO Capital Cuts Rating, Trims Estimates

BMO Capital analyst Tim Long this afternoon cut his rating on Research In Motion (RIMM) to Market Perform from Outperform, chopping his price target on the stock to $64, from $100.
He also trimmed his EPS estimate for the February 2010 fiscal year to $4.13, from $4.21; for FY 2011 he goes to $4.66, from $5.10.
Long thinks the company is likely to lose market share at Verizon (VZ) , which he says accounts for about 30% of the company’s revenue, and where RIMM this year had an estimated 66% of all smart phone sales. He notes that Verizon is “clearly” promoting Android, “with a huge push” for the Motorola (MOT) Droid . The HTC Droid Eris “also seems to be getting fair promotion,” he notes. Long thinks the BlackBerry Storm 2 is an improvement over the original version, but that it lacks some features consumers want. The Tour is a “solid mid-to-high end device,” but he says that “trackball issues are limiting growth and ...

Find more top gadget news, videos, and blogs on GadgetBlips: Phones, Research In Motion, Verizon

Palm Rallies; Upgrades From Barclays, Kaufman

Palm (PALM) shares are getting a lift today from a pair of analyst upgrades.

Barclays Capital analyst Amir Rozwadowski lifted his rating on the shares to Equal Weight from Underweight, with a price target of $11. “While we believe Palm faces ongoing competitive challenges, low near-term guidance and an early 2010 Verizon launch suggest further share downside is limited at current levels,” he writes in a research note. The Barclays analyst says demand for the Pre remains “tempered,” and notes that legacy product declines persist; he also says European demand levels are modest given lack of brand presence. But he also says the company’s guidance for a 30% sales decline in the current quarter likely factors in those trends.
Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu upped his stance on the stock to Buy from Hold, with a price target of $16. “While we remain concerned with competition and profitability, we believe sentiment has gotten overly negative and find the ...

Find more top gadget news, videos, and blogs on GadgetBlips: Phones, Verizon

PC World - Why can't Apple's App Store overlords exercise more discretion when it counts? A $2 Britney Spears app has just approved is available for the iPhone. I thought the app called "It's Britney!" may have been some clever lip-syncing or karaoke app, but it's not.

PC World - The Motorola Droid is doing more than just bashing the iPhone -- it's also smashing the ceiling when it comes to mainstream Android appeal. A full 250,000 people snatched up Droids during the phone's first week in stores, some newly released data suggests. That's four times the number of launch-week sales estimated for the myTouch 3G, which had previously been considered the fastest-selling Android device.

Find more top gadget news, videos, and blogs on GadgetBlips: Phones, Android, Motorola

RIMM: Auriga Launches With Hold Rating

Auriga USA analyst Chandan Sarkar this morning launched coverage of Research In Motion (RIMM) with a Hold rating and $66 price target, modestly above Friday’s close at $62.69.
On the one hand, Sarkar writes, “RIMM is well-positioned…to take advantage of the ongoing worldwide growth of smart phones - a market that…should grow significantly faster than the overall cell phone market as the spread of all-you-can-eat data pricing plans continues to drive the high end of that market.”
But he says that is counter balanced by increasing competitive pressure from Google , Apple , Windows Mobile and others.
“Thus, we consider the overall risk/reward ratio well-balanced in the current stock price,” he writes.
RIMM today is down 94 cents, or 1.5%, to $61.74.

Apple: Will They Produce Their Own iPhone Games?

Apple (AAPL) has shaken up the video game industry, with the emergence of the iPhone and iPod Touch as an attractive platform for game developers. So far, though, almost all of those games come from outside developers. (They do offer a version of Texas Hold ‘Em .) But that could change.
As AppleInsider noted on Friday , the company has posted a job seeking to higher a game and media software engineers for the iPhone/Touch team, “perhaps signaling that the company intends to expand its first-party software offerings.”
The post notes that the company ways a “passionate gamer” to help design “interactive multimedia experiences” on the iPhone and Touch.
Apple today is up $2.85, or 1.4%, to $207.27.

Sprint Soars; Credit Suisse Turns Bullish

Sprint Nextel (S) shares are sharply higher this morning after Credit Suisse analyst Jonathan Chaplin this morning upped his rating on the stock to Outperform from Neutral, while lifting his price target to $6, from $4. The stock closed Friday at $3.10.
Chaplin writes that he had previous warned of two risks to the stock: new pricing plans from T-Mobile and overly bullish 2010 consensus EBITDA estimates. But T-Mobile has now unveiled revised pricing, and he says there is improved visibility into margin trends for 2010. “We believe it is the right time to own Sprint,” he writes.
Credit Suisse also added the stock to its U.S. Focus List. In a separate note, the firm noted that “while we rarely add turnaround stories to the Focus List and fully recognize the degree of risk and volatility involved in this case, the Investment Policy Committee believes that Sprint is one of the few stocks in our coverage universe with a legitimate chance of doubling over ...

Find more top gadget news, videos, and blogs on GadgetBlips: Phones, Sprint

Palm Shrs Rally On Speculation Nokia Could Bid

Palm (PALM) shares are trading higher this morning on what Briefing.com describes as “NOK for PALM” chatter.
While there’s not a lot to go on here, I would note that there’s certainly a case to be made for Nokia (NOK) buying Palm; the Finnish mobile phone giant has lately seen its share of the smart phone market sag, as buyers pass on the company’s Symbian -based phones for models based on more modern mobile operating systems. Buying Palm would give the company control of the well-regarded Web OS software, which certainly offers a more compelling user experience than Symbian.
Palm has a $1.7 billion market cap; throw in debt, preferred shares and a healthy premium and you might get a price tag close to $4 billion. A lot for Palm? Maybe. But too much for a $50 billion market cap company that needs to fix its huge but stumbling business? Maybe not. Would Nokia actually concede that maybe Symbian is less than ideal? We’ll see.
PALM today is up 63 cents, ...

Find more top gadget news, videos, and blogs on GadgetBlips: Phones, Nokia, Symbian
