Nokia Launches N900; $649 At Retail; Good Luck With That

  N900: Going it alone.

Nokia (NOK) today announced that its N900 smart phone is now on sale in the U.S. through Nokia’s stores in New York and Chicago, through independent retailers and via Amazon.com - at $649.
The phone, which runs on Nokia’s Linux-based Maemo operating system, certainly is powerful, with 32 GB of storage, 3G, multi-tasking, 3.5-inch touchscreen, full QWERTY keyboard, Adobe Flash support, 5 MP camera, Carl Zeiss optics and various other technical goodies.
But without U.S. wireless carrier support, consumers face the prospect of an unsubsidized $649 retail price. So who is going to buy it?
NOK today is up 24 cents, or 1.8%, to $13.92.

Palm Shrs Rally On Speculation Nokia Could Bid

Palm (PALM) shares are trading higher this morning on what Briefing.com describes as “NOK for PALM” chatter.
While there’s not a lot to go on here, I would note that there’s certainly a case to be made for Nokia (NOK) buying Palm; the Finnish mobile phone giant has lately seen its share of the smart phone market sag, as buyers pass on the company’s Symbian -based phones for models based on more modern mobile operating systems. Buying Palm would give the company control of the well-regarded Web OS software, which certainly offers a more compelling user experience than Symbian.
Palm has a $1.7 billion market cap; throw in debt, preferred shares and a healthy premium and you might get a price tag close to $4 billion. A lot for Palm? Maybe. But too much for a $50 billion market cap company that needs to fix its huge but stumbling business? Maybe not. Would Nokia actually concede that maybe Symbian is less than ideal? We’ll see.
PALM today is up 63 cents, ...

Find more top gadget news, videos, and blogs on GadgetBlips: Phones, Nokia, Symbian

Nokia N900: Hot and Not
    (PC World)

PC World - Nokia's N900, the next tablet/smartphone/whatever to bat against Apple's iPhone, ships today. It's a big occasion for Nokia, as the N900 is its most powerful smartphone yet, and the device's Maemo 5 open source operating system is a diversion from Symbian, which Nokia tends to support.

Find more top gadget news, videos, and blogs on GadgetBlips: Phones, Nokia, Nokia N900, Symbian

Yahoo: Is Carol Bartz Out As CES Keynoter?

Last month, the Consumer Electronics Association announced that Yahoo (YHOO) CEO Carol Bartz would be giving one of the keynotes at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January.
But something odd is happening.
In a release on Tuesday , CEA announced the addition of Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs to the keynote schedule, “rounding out an impressive lineup of speakers, including leaders from Microsoft , Intel , Ford , Hisense and Nokia .”
Notice who is missing?
Could be an oversight. But then take a look at the list of keynotes on the CES web site . Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer . Gary Shapiro , who runs the CEA. Ford’s Alan Mulally . Intel CEO Paul Otellini . Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasuvo . Qualcomm’s Jacobs . And Hisense Chairman Zhou Houjioan .
Notice who is missing, again?
So either Bartz is out, or she’s being ignored. And Carol Bartz is a hard person to ignore.

Nokia To Replace Up To 14M Phone Chargers For Shock Hazard

Here’s a shocker. Well, potentially.
Nokia (NOK) this morning said it is offering to replace up to 14 million phone chargers which pose a risk of electrical shock. The company said the chargers were manufactured by a Chinese supplier called BYD, which according to the WSJ will absorb the costs of the exchange program.
Nokia said it discovered that the plastic covers of the affected chargers “could come loose and separate, exposing the charger’s internal components and potentially posing an electrical shock hazard if certain internal components are touched while the charger is plugged into a live socket.” It is offering to replace the chargers at no cost to consumers.
Nokia said it is not aware of any incidents or injuries related to these chargers.
