Amazon's Kindle 2 Suddenly Appears [Kindle]
Gizmodo —
... Boy Genius just unveiled shots of what is very likely the Kindle 2. Notice the follow-up to the snowspeeder-like original Amazon e-book reader is more rounded, more early-iPod in its proportions, but still white with the same basic screen. The cool sparkly LCD status bar seems to be gone, a joystick has replaced the clickwheel, and the other buttons are smaller for fewer accidental page turns. No word on the availability of this baby, of course. As you might expect, Boy Genius has quite a few more pictures, and more details too, so feel free to drop on over there to have a ...
Amazon's Kindle 2 in the wild?

... of a leather sleeve for Kindle 2. If these photos are indeed of a next generation Kindle, one cannot help but wonder if the apparent continued use of side control buttons means that a touch screen will not make it to the next generation Kindle. Recent news reports from Forbes have the iPhone stealing the eBook reading lead from Kindle. The recently announced Sony PRS-700 Reader is slated to include a touch screen interface when the device appears in November 2008. BGR

Analysis: It's markedly uglier than Sony's reader, and not much of an improvement at all in that regard. When it comes to looks, Amazon is completely clueless. It opted first for a love-it or hate-it sculpted geometry, and now for a "fake Chinese iPod knockoff" look.
With its excellent store free cellular hookup, though, I'll wager that it will still have a sharp edge over Sony's machine for those who aren't fastidiously baking their own text files.

Pretty good, indeed.
The Kindle 2 retains the same basic form factor as the original Kindle, while adding a little width and length, as the well-lit comparison photo up there shows. Note that the screen size is essentially unchanged.
Rounding out: there’s still EVDO downloads; there’s no more SD card slot; ...

... We like the rounded, straightforward shape of this design better than the old one. The two are approximately the same size with an identical screen, and both have our fave feature — wireless connectivity via EV-DO, letting you download new electronic books from practically anywhere. We're wondering if this new Kindle 2 will be cheaper than its predecessor, when we'll be able to get our paws on one, and if Amazon plans to manufacture enough to go around this time.
