Advanced Micro Devices announced on Monday its most powerful graphics technology to date, going after Nvidia in the rarified--and closely watched--enthusiast game segment.
This also marks the current performance pinnacle of AMD's strategy to beat Nvidia at the high end by building comparatively smaller chips and then ganging them ...

AMD ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2
D' Technology Weblog —
... with two 4870 X2s (QuadFire) often varies widely from title to title,” he said.
In September, AMD is also expected to bring out the HD 4850 X2, a dual-chip board with slightly lower performance. The higher-end 4870 X2 is rated at 2.4 TFLOPs (or teraFLOPs a common yardstick for raw graphics chip compute power) and communicates with memory at 230GB per second, while the 4850 X2 is rated at 2.0 TFLOPs and has a memory bandwidth of 128GB/sec.

AMD Relies on Strength in Numbers, Combines Chips to Beat Nvidia
Wired: Gadget Lab —
... As simple as the concept sounds, it's been a difficult task. In the
past, companies that coupled GPUs were only able to achieve 1.5 times
better performance. AMD hopes to get 1.8 times better performance by
coupling the 4870 chips. A large advantage to combining two 4870s is
that together they can use two gigabytes of memory, compared to
standard high-end graphic boards that can only use one gigabyte, according to a story in CNN. ...
AMD doubles the 4870 fun, still under $400
CrunchGear —
I’ve been saying this a lot this year: it’s a good time to be in the market for a video card! NVIDIA and AMD are firing volley after volley of significant improvements and price reductions. Although NVIDIA’s on-GPU physics processing is compelling, AMD’s new 4870 X2 (essentially two of the impressive 4870 cards stuck together) provides an insane amount of power for the cost.
If one 4870 made NVIDIA drop their prices by hundreds, what will two do?
