The juicy gossip claims that discussions kicked off a few months ago when Steve was still running the day-to-day show out in Cupertino, but that the conversation has continued in his absence -- and they'd like to get a product on the shelves next year, likely much to AT&T's ...

What would a Verizon iPhone look like?
Gadgetell —
... it a ploy?
Another consideration on these Verizon-Apple talks are that it could be nothing more than scare tactics from Apple in working to negotiate a better deal with AT&T. We know AT&T and Apple are meeting about extending the iPhone’s exclusivity and making this kind of leak could strengthen Apple’s position. AT&T is thinking long and hard about this, make no mistake. Larry Dignan put forth this idea here.

Verizon in Talks over iPhone Deal?
IntoMobile - Cell Phone News, Information, and Analysis —
... As much fun as AT&T has had with the iPhone, Verizon is now the biggest carrier on the block with Alltel under their wing, and Apple no doubt once a peice of that pie. Back at the original iPhone launch, choosing between CDMA and GSM on a global scale was a pretty easy decision to make, but with a common ground in 4G on the way (presuming WiMAX sticks to netbook and UMD connectivity), it’s a decision handset manufacturers won’t have to make anymore.

Rumor: Apple in talks for Verizon iPhone in 2010
DVICE Atom Feed —
... there are some high-level talks going on between Apple and Verizon about bringing the iPhone to the carrier.
Don't expect it to happen this year, however. Instead, it's likely that when the iPhone goes LTE - the next generation of cellular tech - Verizon will hop on board. That's because both AT&T; and Verizon will be offering LTE service, while the two carriers offer different types of cell service now. It's all still a rumor now, but it seems like a likely one.
