Another consideration on these Verizon-Apple talks are that it could be nothing more than scare tactics from Apple in working to negotiate a better deal with AT&T. We know AT&T and Apple are meeting about extending the iPhone’s exclusivity and making this kind of leak could strengthen Apple’s position. AT&T is thinking long and hard about this, make no mistake. ... As much fun as AT&T has had with the iPhone, Verizon is now the biggest carrier on the block with Alltel under their wing, and Apple no doubt once a peice of that pie. Back at the original iPhone launch, choosing between CDMA and GSM on a global scale was a pretty easy decision to make, but with a common ground in 4G on the way (presuming WiMAX sticks to netbook and UMD connectivity), it’s a decision handset manufacturers won’t have to make anymore.

Don't expect it to happen this year, however. Instead, it's likely that when the iPhone goes LTE - the next generation of cellular tech - Verizon will hop on board.
