Apple patents 'winter-friendly' touchscreen gloves
Tech Digest —
... gloves block the electrical impulses from your skin, meaning that a capacitive touchscreen doesn't get any signal when your mittened hand touches it. You might be thinking 'how can you patent a product that's already on the market?', but the difference here is that the fingertips of the unconductive outer layer can be drawn back to reveal a more conductive inner layer. Apple suggests this could be accomplished with an elastic ring. Apple's patent application (via AppleInsider) Related posts: DOTS Gloves | Etre Touchy Gadget Gloves ...
Apple iPhone touchscreen gloves patented
SlashGear —
... By not leaving them permanently open, the basic heat-retaining properties of the gloves are not impaired.
The application lists Steven Hotelling and Ashwin Sunder as inventors, and was filed on June 28th 2007 (a day before the original iPhone’s launch). It remains to be seen whether these peek-a-boo gloves will ever reach the market - perhaps they’re to be the “next big thing” at Apple’s final MacWorld keynote.

... a capacitive touchscreen. It also suggests the glove could have apertures on the fingertips for opening and closing the more protective outer layer. Of course, the concept is far from new -- just do a quick Google search for "iPhone gloves" to see a wide variety of choices -- and Apple doesn't really dabble in this sort of iPhone / iPod accessory, but if Phil keeps his hands in his pockets for the first half of the Macworld keynote, we're gonna start to get ideas. Apple's Patent for iPhone-Compatible Gloves: Forgotten, Thankfully [Apple]
Gizmodo —
... Apple's patent called for an outer layer that could be pulled back to allow the inner layer to touch the device. That inner layer would simulate the electrical charge of a finger when exposed, allowing for operation of the iPhone through fabric. The original patent was filed the day before the iPhone's launch, but never saw the light of day. It's a fine idea, compared to the other workarounds, but still silly enough to have been more embarrassing than useful if released. [AppleInsider] ...
apple gloves to warm hands, empty wallets

... warmer layer, but aperatures at the tips allow the inner layer access to the touchscreen. The design allows these aperatures to open in a variety of ways (for, I guess, different styles of gloves), from peeling back the outer glove to removable caps.
Here’s betting these gloves, if released, will be at least 10% more expensive than the inevitable flood of knock-offs. Oh, Apple. I love you so, but you hurt my wallet.
