Luxofor traffic light concept invites square addition to spheres
Gizmo Watch —
... The spherical shape for the bulbs is however used because it allows the light to spread both evenly and brightly, making it easier for the drivers to notice. But often it becomes difficult to notice these signals from a distance owing to the dimension; therefore the design team believes that replacing the spherical shape with squares could make the signals more easily noticeable and recognizable, with larger lit area for the same overall dimensions.

... And marvelously simple, but that's beside the point. The Luxofor traffic light concept improves upon a nearly archaic design that still relies on spherical fixtures when there's really no need. Lebedev's team asserts that using square lights backed with bright laser diodes would make better use of the available space and provide a more noticeable signal to drowsy motorists. The roar of "why didn't I think of that?" being simultaneously stated is downright deafening. [Via Electronista] Filed under: Misc. Gadgets Art Lebedev outthinks the room with square ...

... or delayed somehow. His studio just introduced its Luxofor prototype, a traffic light replacement that uses very bright diodes for increased visibility. The new square design makes more efficient use of the available space, and can display more detailed signals. Just a concept for now, but the Luxofor is pretty, practical, and logical, so it has just as much of a chance as any of Art's designs to become real. [Electronista] ...

Square-Shaped Traffic Light
TechFresh, Consumer Electronics Guide —
... Unlike traditional traffic lights, Art Lebedev’s new square-shaped traffic light design offers more efficient packaging and can display more detailed signals. It uses very bright LEDs for increased visibility to drivers and pedestrians. Though it’s still a concept at this stage, hopefully it will become real one day! [Electronista] ...
