DS-DSLR: Homebrew Nintendo DS remote for Canon DSLR
Boing Boing Gadgets —
... DS has enough power to do all the calculations you need for these sorts of shots but is so much smaller and lighter than a laptop. (And can play Advance Wars.)
Steve said he's considering building more for sale. Do it! Hell, build out a reference design and let's figure out how to mass produce them. This is exactly the sort of fantastic hack that reminds how homebrew is extending the capability of our devices and should be encouraged by all parties involved.

Homebrew DS-DSLR Uses Nintendo DS as a Canon EOS Remote [Homebrew]
Gizmodo —
... Really nice piece of DS homebrew here: when photographer Steve was searching for a less bulky alternative to tethering his Canon 5D to his laptop for remote functions during shoots, he didn't have to look further than his DS Lite, which he was always packing anyway. With a custom cable that connects through the GBA cartridge slot, Steve used the Canon SDK to write a powerful remote app that does everything his laptop could—saving bulk, time, and money. And it's got some tricks even the laptop couldn't pull off. ...

DS Lite And Canon DSLR Play Nice
Ubergizmo —
This has got to be one of the weirder hardware hacks in recent memory - Steve from Panocamera.com managed to build a custom interface from his Canon DSLR that is viewed over the Nintendo DS Lite, where the latter is able to perform HDR intervalometer-based shot bracketing, remote shots in bulb mode, as well as a sound-based "Clapper" control (which uses the DS Lite's microphone, obviously). The DS Lite seems to have the necessary firepower to perform the calculations require to shoot all manner of shots, and also works great as a portable ...
Panocamera Mods Nintendo DS Into DSLR Remote
Wired: Gadget Lab —
... to tether to his Canon
DSLR.
The process, documented at Panocamera, involved using a devkitPro toolset
to write a program for the Nintendo DS to control the DSLR. And then
connecting the camera to the game device required some tampering of
ports and pin connectors.
Pretty neat stuff -- though it's much easier said than done, to the
average techy at least. Panocamera is pondering over selling this "mod"
eventually for various DSLRs.

Nintendo DS Hacked To Control Camera
GadgetReview —
... might be a better, make that a more reasonable option, but if you’ve got some hacking skills you’d do what this guy did: hack a Nintendo DS to act as a remote viewer and controller for a Digital SLR camera. Not only did he have to jimmy rig the hardware to connect the two device, but he’s built his own interface.
His motive you ask? He got sick of lugging around his laptop from shoot to shoot.

Nintendo DS hacked to control DSLR shooting
Engadget —
... This is easily one of the more unorthodox hacks we've come across, and while we have all ideas only a few will even bother to give it a go, we couldn't help but share. Steve from PanoCamera decided that lugging around a laptop for precisely controlled ...
Nintendo DS Controlling A DSLR Camera
MAKE Magazine —
... It occurred to me that if I could somehow tether a DSLR to an instant-on device like an Arduino microcontroller I would have less weight to carry around and could get more work done. After mentally spec'ing out what I would need, I realized the solution was right in front of me - because I bring it with me for Mario Kart wireless races on long night jobs - (In the manner of John Lasseter's slow epiphany voice): "Use-the-Nintendo-D-S." Duh.
