Lithium Iron Phosphate Batteries Promise Charging in 'Seconds', World Braces For Disappointment [Batteries]
Gizmodo —
Battery "breakthroughs" are a dime a dozen, so excuse me for sounding a bit jaded here. But a battery that can charge in seconds? Without fatigue? If this wasn't published in Nature, I'd probably laugh. Scientists at MIT claim to have discovered a new technique for manufacturing the lithium-ion batteries, using a unique mix of lithium iron phosphate instead of the traditional lithium cobalt found in most of your gadgets' batteries. Sparing you the gory details, these experiments resulted in a small test battery that could charge in ...

... positioned near the mouth of the tunnels, they don't enter the tunnel and can't produce a charge. The MIT researchers have essentially created an easier way for the ions to reach and enter these tunnels, which they are calling a "beltway". This method for charging means batteries don't lose their capacity to charge over time. It also allows for faster charging, and smaller batteries that carry the same capacity. Smaller batteries can lead to smaller, lighter battery-powered devices. more info at BBC ...

... battery material," something that could usher in smaller and lighter cells that could recharge in moments versus hours. There's even talk that this technology could be adapted for use in automobiles, and honestly, it doesn't take an electrical engineer to understand how rapid charge / discharge batteries could "induce lifestyle changes." Hey, laptop battery makers -- could you guys look into getting these ready to go in machines by CES 2010? That'd be swell, thanks. [Via BBC, thanks Simon] Filed under: Misc. ... more efficiently into the battery. Samples of the new batteries have been able to fully charge roughly 18 times faster than conventional batteries. In one particular example, the modified battery received a full charge in 20 seconds, which compares quite favorably to the 6 minutes required for a non-enhanced version of the battery. The researchers have said that the new batteries could be available on the market in two to three years. You can read more about the technology at the BBC website .
