AppleInsider —
... by 13.6 to 21.8 million metric tons as the replacement rate for existing chargers decreases. Noticeably absent from the list of supporters is Apple. Its ubiquitous dock connector was introduced on the third-generation iPod in 2003 and has appeared on every iPod and iPhone since. By the time of the 2012 deadline, the dock connector will have been around for almost a decade. In a possible nod to the iPhone's exemption, the GSMA targets only "majority" adoption by 2012. ... support what they're describing as the universal charging solution (or UCS), which itself will have to meet a number of strict requirements in order to be broadly compatible. Of course, while everyone including the likes of Nokia, Motorola, LG, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson have signed on with the GSMA, there are a few big names absent, not the least of which, unsurprisingly, is Apple, so there's certainly still quite a ways to go before we have a truly universal standard. ... that will work with the others' phones.
This standardized charger will be 50% more energy efficient and will eliminate tons of duplicate or obsolete chargers from landfills. Every time you buy a new phone, you won't need a new charger. Save money, save the planet. Next time you go on a road trip, you only need to pack one charger for everyone.
The plan calls for all new phones to be supported by the year 2012. Noteworthy absentee: Apple. Damn renegades.
