... Clearly there's plenty of cash to go around for said consultants: Best Buy reported $43 million dollars a few Christmases ago from unused gift cards. For that kind of dough, I want to see a gift card do a little bit more than poorly reproduce my 96kbps MP3s; In the gift card Battlemodo that appears to be taking shape, Target's 1.2MP camera with included USB cord and voucher for 40 free digital prints is still in the lead. On one hand, it's nice to see gift cards that do something. On the other, ideally, they'd allow you to do something creative with your gift card: a speaker only is really interesting if you could also record some sort of message on the device to play out of that speaker.
I'm interested in knowing who Target and Best Buy's supplier for these cards is? Sounds like there's a new gift card supplier in town.

[image] Target must be pissed. The company approaches the holidays with new gift cards that have a built-in 1.2-megapixel digital camera and what does its competitor, Best Buy , do? Best Buy tries a different route with gift cards that have speakers built in to them. While not nearly as cool as Target’s concept, Best Buy has gotten this far by offering bullshit services like pairing your Bluetooth headset with your phone for $10 bucks. Being able to plug your gift card into your iPod right before you clear the $50 credit at the cash register seems pointless to me. Let’s see if Best Buy follows the way of Circuit City . Link [ via ]

I'm one of the few who thinks there's nothing wrong with giving a gift card (especially because I love to get gift cards). If you have some reservations about them being boring gifts, then you may reconsider — Target is introducing gift cards that double as mini digital cameras, while Best Buy will have gift cards that are also speakers!
With such fun stuff built into the gift cards, you may not want to redeem them. These could also cease to take the wind out of people's sales that were expecting more than just a gift card. What do you think of this idea? ...
