... We all know that floppies have gone the way of the dodo for quite some time already, and so have CD-Rs. What happens when someone is stuck with nostalgia for old stuff? Well, that results in the Floppy CD-R disc, of course. They look like a standard 3.5" floppy, but turn the square body upside down and you'll see the shiny bottom of a CD-R. Cutting out its corners would mean it won't be able to hold the standard CD-R amount, maxing out at just 200MB, but at least that is 138 times superior to the original floppy. CD-R discs that come in the shape (but not the feel) of vintage floppies. They're those obnoxious mini-CDs, though, so they only hold 200MB... which is, at least, 138.89 times more data than a real floppy can hold. As mini-CDs, make sure not to cram these into your SuperDrive. 4 will cost you $28, which is just outrageous unless you're looking for a novel way to distribute your chiptunes.

A 50-pack of rewritable discs can be picked up for a few bucks these days, which makes the price of these novelties even more shocking. A single floppy will cost a hard $10, plus another $4 for shipping. Insane.
Much better, and a great idea for a future how-to project, would be to hack a USB stick together with a floppy. That way you could cram a fistful of Gigabytes into a mere 3.5 inches.

... to take a dying format and disguise it as a dead piece of technology. I’m not necessarily implying that we’re going to stop seeing CD’s in the near future, but I can count the number of times I’ve burned a CD in the last year on one hand. I usually just copy files onto a flash drive, or email the file if it’s small enough. With their relatively small (200MB) size and $10 per disc price tag, they aren’t good for much more than nostalgia.

So, I was cleaning out an an old desk drawer the other day when I pulled out a floppy disk. My son picked it up and asked me what it was, and so I explained it to him. He looked at me, looked at the disk, and then peered at the iMac sitting on my desk and asked me where to stick it. I felt old.
