... reflective - meaning that the display requires just 0.16MW of electricity per square centimeter. The absence of a backlight and TFTs means it’s also cheaper to make: one third of the cost, Funai are saying.
Picture quality is apparently on a par with printed characters on paper. Funai plan to commercialize the technology in 2009, with displays initially ranging from seven to fourteen inches. The company website is pretty bare of details right now, though.

Funai claims that this reduces electricity consumption to .16 megawatts per square centimeter – only 1% of the electricity consumed by a conventional LCD. The clarity of the image is reportedly good, and the reflective technology means that this new display is significantly clearer in sunlight, which is normally a challenge with most LCDs.
Commercialization of this screen is aimed for next year.

Funai has been in the news a lot lately with taking over Philips home theater biz and developing new LCD technology, but the companies recent lawsuit is extremely notable. Apparently the company just won its lawsuit that claims 14 companies are infringing on a Funai patent. The court has yet to decide wether these TVs all going to be banned from entering the U.S. of A. So it’s hard to say what’s going to happen to Vizio, Amtran, Proview, TPV, Top Victory Electronics, Envision, Syntax-Brillian, and Taiwan Kolin. Dare the courts ban ...
