GE microholographic storage promises cheap 500GB discs, Blu-ray and DVD compatibility
Engadget — Ah, holographic storage -- you've held so much promise for cheap optical media since you were first imagined in research papers published in the early 60s. Later today, GE will be trying to keep the dream alive when it announces a new technique that promises to take holographic storage mainstream. GE's breakthrough in microholographics -- which, as ...

GE creates 500GB holographic storage disc
Tech Digest — ... them to be introduced by 2012 but the real key is, of course, how expense they will be. Blu-rays began as $1 per GB when they first came out dropping to something closer to half that today. GE hopes these holographic discs will be 10 cents per GB, so a much more affordable $5 for the whole thing. The thing I can't help wondering, though, is whether there's really a viable future in optical storage? Between SSDs and cloud computing, I was hoping to rid myself of discs by 2012. (via NYT) ...

G.E. invents Blu-Ray killer
Boing Boing Gadgets — ... said it held the promise of being a big step forward in digital storage with a wide range of potential uses in commercial, scientific and consumer markets. So, in 5 years, we could all be buying 440GB optical disks. Yay! It's a nice thought, but when I can already buy a 500GB external hard drive for $50 and my internet connection can download a DVD in a couple of hours, why the breathless hype? This sort of thing is doomed to niche archival use. [NYT]

GE's 500GB holographic storage discs. Yup, holograms!
DVICE Atom Feed — ... discs can store 500GB of data by using holographic light patterns to densely pack three-dimensional data. While still in the developmental phase at this point, industry experts are hopeful that it could become the next form of low-cost storage for consumers. Best news out of this development is that new micro-holographic players will be backwards compatible to play CD, DVD and Blu-ray discs. The love affair with holograms just got sweeter. Holographic Storage enables 500GB of data on a single disc
Tech Ticker —   General Electronics is working on a new tech that could possibly doom the future of CDs, DVDs and BDs. With the technique of holographic storage, GE has developed a disc that can hold up to 500GB of data at a very low cost. Unlike the optical technology, holographic technology can pack data more densely thus eventually allowing to store more data. Though the holographic storage is not that cheap, GE’s cheap way to success is the use of microholographic storage that depends on smaller, less complex holograms. Their estimation says it will take less than 10 cents per gigabyte to produce as compared to Blu-ray’s $1 per ...
