RIM definitely spends more on its components than iPhone if we are talking about the newer BlackBerry’s. But as to the profit margin on the Bold, if we say the Bold will be on sale for $350 taking away the cost to make it, RIM would be looking at a 45 percent gross profit margin. Breaking it down a little bit further, the materials for the Bold cost $158.16, and assembly/testing costs only $11.25. Also of interest (to me anyway) is the BlackBerry Curve apparently costs RIM $103.00 in materials. No details on how much the Pearl or Pearl Flip cost in materials… But if I had to guess, the Pearl would probably come in around $60 - $80 per unit. Interesting stuff! PR News: — ... they have managed to come up with some figures. Parts and materials for the Bold comes to just $158.16, with assembly and testing costs coming to $11.25, that a total cost of $169.41. IF RIM was to sell the BlackBerry for $350 that would mean a markup of $45, before R&D sosts and software. Carriers then have to pay for marketing and shipping costs, as well as freebies that they might give away. Either way, there is still a lot of profit for each handset. Source

Britain, Canada, France, India and others already have the BlackBerry bold and it is expected in the States soon with AT&T expecting to retail the Bold at $300 on 2 year agreement, while Rogers in Canada sell the Bold for the equivalent of $254.
