Intel bought Netbook.com last week and will most likely turn it into a portal for Atom-powered netbooks. Intel is working to define the space as there's some debate about which computers should even be called "netbook".

Intel buys netbook.com
jkOnTheRun —
It appears the term "netbook" must be official with the report that Intel, maker of the Atom processor that appears in most mini-notebooks, has purchased the domain netbook.com. If you go to netbook.com it takes you to a page where Intel is promoting the Atom processor:
What I find amazing is that the netbook domain was free for grabbing, or if not how much Intel paid for it?

Intel shows its hand: we are netbooks
Gadgetell —
... has fizzled.
Making headway?
I expect Intel to make a good stab at it, but it won’t matter. Makers will continue to fill every conceivable price point with machines to cover their bases. Sadly we’ll all still be trying to figure out how netbook 234509kckd98 is different from netbook 234509kckd97, we’ll still get just as frustrated, and we’ll just give in and buy the closest one. Just like they want us to.

Intel starts Netbook.com portal
SlashGear —
... as many Linux based netbooks are returned to retailers than versions running Windows XP Home; while that may say more about expectations of OS, it also says that buyers need educating as to what compromises are made when a low-cost device is bought.
Those compromises can include an unfamiliar open-source OS or relatively under-powered hardware. Hopefully Intel’s portal will address that and create more realistic expectations as to what a netbook can offer.
