SlashGear — Intel have officially announced two new Atom processors, the Z550 and the Z515.  First tipped back in March, the processors - which Intel expect to find homes in MIDs - run at 2GHz and 1.2GHz respectively, with Hyperthreading supported on the faster chip.  The company also demonstrated their upcoming Moorestown MID platform, which brings with it super-frugal power demands and the potential for smaller devices. Despite the fastest clock speed we’ve seen in an Atom so far, the Z550 still brings it in at under 3W of power.  As for ...

Intel Ups the Atom Ante: Claims They’re For MIDs
jkOnTheRun — ... but maybe there’s something else inside too. The Atom processor is the standard chipset for netbooks but in the announcement Intel made it clear these new chips are aimed at Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs). Intel is apparently not going to give up on the MID genre, even though it hasn’t seen any real action. I’m sure we’ll see at least the Z550 appear in netbooks once released, as it is definitely the hot category by anyone’s standards. (via press release) ...

Intel Atom celebrates birthday with two new brothers
Gadgetell — ... to.  Sounds like an interesting idea, though its hard to imagine anyone running into this chip as often as the Z550. Intel is the obvious leader in processors for netbooks, and the new Atoms are just furthering their lead.  NVIDIA, ARM, AMD and Via are still working on their chips, which may prove more interesting than the Atom chips, but it might take a lot of work for anyone to take the netbook crown from Intel and the Atom.
