Sony unveils automated, photo-taking camera dock

... the Party-Shot personal photographer. The camera dock, designed to work with the DSC-WX1 and DSC-TX1 Cyber-shot digital cameras, can be programmed to tilt up to 24 degrees and pan a full 360 degrees.
In addition to the automatic angle adjustments, the unit can also detect faces and then take a well composed photo. Priced at $150, Sony plans to make the device available in September, in the meantime you can see the Party-Shot in action here.

... In theory! In practice, it's hard to see how well this would work. Although its facial-recognition, focus, flash control and intelligent rotation represent distinct advantages over a drunk dude with a camera, the fact that it's stranded wherever you put it seems like it would sort of kill the possibility of truly candid shots, and make your photo albums a mite repetitive. Also, it's a little creepy, as you can see in this video. I don't even know what I'd think of that wasted. ...
