Lenovo building a SMS security feature to safeguard the ThinkPad
Gizmo Watch —
... All seems good, but a demerit follows the system – for the feature to function the notebook needs to be in the mobile phones coverage area and moreover the notebook should have an active broadband to receive and send signal. Alternative security measures are required in this ever increasing mayhem of spam and infringement, so we are all praise for this added feature, but is it an add-on or an pre-installed trait, we aren’t actually sure.

Lenovo introducing SMS disable to Thinkpad
Boing Boing Gadgets —
... WAN card. So the extra security has a monthly fee. It also means the first thing canny thieves will do when they steal a Thinkpad is pop out the SIM card, but there's realistically slim chance of that: most thieves are idiots. Still, wouldn't a better security measure be not only to disable the laptop, but secretly phone home with location coordinates once the code is activated?

Future Lenovo Laptops Will Include SMS Disable
Mobile Whack —
... your laptop after stealing it. With the SMS disable option you will be able to send a tiny SMS message which will disable your laptop. In order to set it up you need to also get a data plan and get a WAN card but it should be all worth it. The process is reversible in case you misplace your laptop but think it was stolen. There’s a minor major flaw with the whole concept. In case the thief removes the SIM card from the laptop your hole SMS disable plan won’t work at all. via ohgizmo!
