The iPhone isn’t going to perform well (speed, battery life, stability, etc.) with a dozen applications all vying for a piece of the iPhone’s CPU and battery at the same time. But, the iPhone may be able to handle running a couple iPhone apps at the same time with an acceptable hit to performance.

... problem still remains that these user selected background apps will be limited as the Apple iPhone just isn’t going to perform well with speed, stability and battery life with too many apps all vying for the Apple iPhone CPU and battery.
Having said that there shouldn’t be too much problem with running say two or even three app in the background of your iPhone and should deliver an acceptable hit performance wise. No doubts we’ll see come update time.

A background running IM app, at least, would be extraordinarily welcome on my iPhone, although Pairingo offers that functionality a bit, keeping you logged in on their servers for several minutes even when you've switched out of the app.
