The new technology is able to produce batteries similar to the lithium rechargeable batteries commonly used today, would hit the market in two to three years’ time. The MIT’s technology allows to produce small battery that can be charged and discharged in 10 to 20 seconds, also allows the reduction in weight and size.

To get around this problem a new surface structure has been created which allows the lithium ions to move around the surface and enter a tunnel when needed. This benefits the system in 2 ways. First off, the battery can be charged quicker (ie, 10 - 20 seconds) and the size of the battery is also made smaller.
If tests are successful we could see this new battery being put in place in the next few years.
