My biggest fear with Android is that the hardware across different manufacturers will vary so much that third-party software won't work consistently across the platform. And for all the minor complaints about the G1's size, there's much to recommend a slide-out QWERTY keyboard for a social networking and instant messaging device.

Motorola is gearing up to make its first “Android Social Smart Phone”. Engineers at Motorola are hard at work on their own Android handset. Motorola’s Android-based device will offer a slide-out Qwerty keyboard. People who’ve seen the pictures and spec sheets for the device say it looks like a higher-end version of the HTC phone, called the T-Mobile G1. But it’s expected to sell for less, at prices similar to the Krave, which is available for $150 with a two-year contract. Motorola has always been one of my favorite mobile phone vendors so I have felt somewhat bereft as the company has slowly fallen pray to it’s own hesitancy and miss-steps. There was a time when Moto made high status phones. I remember when the Star-Tac was the phone to own. Then the RAZR came and changed the game. It was such a monster hit that the company decided they could just keep making slight variations on the phone forever…as the industry rushed past them.
