MTV Multiplayer » Harmonix: How ‘Rock Band 2′ Lets You Access First Game’s Songs
'Rock Band 2'“Rock Band 2” developers at Harmonix have been promising that all the songs on the first game’s disc will be playable for owners of this fall’s sequel. Until yesterday, the only theory I had heard about how this would work was Joystiq honcho Chris Grant’s (hopefully joking) suggestion that owners of the first game send their game discs to Harmonix and get a new combo disc. Transferring Rock Band tracks to Rock Band 2
CrunchGear — ... According to MTV Multiplayer, when Rock Band 2 is released on the 14th for Xbox 360, the original Rock Band will get a software update that’ll add an export feature. You’ll be able to export the songs to your console’s hard drive after paying a fee that “will not exceed $5.” The fee is because MTV Games has to pay licensing fees to the original content owners for moving the song from the first game to the second game. There will be a code that comes with Rock Band 2 that you’ll have to enter during the original Rock Band export process. ...

Still, we're pretty happy about this. [Multiplayer via ...

Hidden cost revealed for Rock Band 2's backwards compatibility
DVICE Atom Feed — Harmonix explained how they're implementing the promised feature of Rock Band 1 owners being able to play that game's song in Rock Band 2: by charging you a fee to cover the complicated licensing issues. Because I'm sure Harmonix wasn't going to make enough money from the actual game sales to cover the cost of porting the songs over. But they promise it's not going to be more than five dollars, so keep those 400 Microsoft points handy. They also point out you could easily do this with a rental copy of the game. ...
