"The 11 bytes created by vfatbuilddummy83buffer() to pad the field for short filenames cannot be used to access the file, and contain bytes which are invalid in FAT and VFAT filenames, and therefore are not filenames as that term is and has been used in the technical community."

The person who created the patch is called Andrew Tridgell, he is currently one of the developers behind the Samba project, this is the second patch he has created to try and workaround Microsoft’s patents. The first patch did work however it provided too many limitations for users, such as not allowing long file names.
