OLPC Give One Get One sales confirmed to begin on November 17
Gadgetell —
... We can venture a pretty solid guess that we will be seeing the same $399 price tag from last year, but time will tell just how accurate that will be. Of course, with a November 17 sale date, if you are looking to get these in time for the holiday season you may want to be prepared to place your order on that first day. The good part is that the sales are being handled through Amazon which should alleviate any of those shipping delays that we saw last year.

The state of the One Laptop Per Child project
Scobleizer —
... Lots of you heard a lot of hoopla about the OLPC project (er, One Laptop Per Child). This is a strange little machine that’s aimed at bringing computing to kids around the world. It’s been a while since I heard anything about it, other than they had started shipping with both Linux and Windows, which shocked a few people in the community who saw that as something negative. ...

... well as a remix of Kubuntu with the shiney KDE 4 Desktop. That doesn’t cover the myriad of other Ubuntu based remixes out there. Ubuntu has firmly entrenched itself as THE Linux distro that is in everyone’s bag. Fedora also had a booth show casing Fedora 9 and the OLPC or XO PC. For those who don’t know, the default OS on the OLPC is Fedora at it’s core with the Sugar UI providing a very kid friendly interface. I also heard through the grapevine that the XO will be having a give one get one sale again this holiday season and this time, it’s going to be on Amazon.com. ...

Gizmos for Geeks —
Inspired by the OLPC project, the state of South Carolina’s Department of Education in conjunction with non-profit org, the Palmetto Project, has decided to provide each SC elementary school student with a laptop.
As computers continue to become cheaper, it won’t be surprising to see more states adopt similar programs to get laptops/computers into the hands of all school children.

First Impressions with Intel’s Latest Classmate PC
GeekDad —
Intel recently sent a demo unit of their educational line of netbooks, dubbed Classmate PC, for review. I was excited to check out their offering if only to see what One Laptop Per Child’s biggest competitor was up to. While I was initially skeptical, what I found was an ecosystem that focused less on the stand-alone experience and more on the classroom.
At face value, Intel’s Classmate PC looks like a standard netbook. But the internals are ruggedly constructed and resistant to the drops and rough handling kids are known for. Also notable is the nice large external handle for ...
