I've been all over the Sony Vaio P since its unveiling at CES this year. It's hot, but I do have my qualms. First off is the price. I know Sony's been telling us not to call it a netbook, but seriously after taking in the size, weight, and specs, the resemblance is there. Why its price starts at hundreds more than other ultra portables in its class is beyond me. So when Sony rolled out a $200 rebate on the Vaio P series notebook yesterday, I admit I was a bit surprised.

Whoever Sony wants to sell it to, here's who I think will like it: portability junkies who find netbooks too cumbersome, but who still want a usable keyboard. If the idea of that appeals to you — and you're prepared to pay for it — go for it. If you're even slightly ambivalent, however, wait until Windows 7 is out so you can avoid the hours of tinkering that the Vaio P demands to get the most from it.

The new Foleo should be lighter and in terms of size comparable to the Sony Vaio P series. Of course, it would rely on ARM-based processor (something like Snapdragon preferably), which should ensure long battery life. Part of that may be due to the annoying 90 second boot time, but a lot of it is probably because of the $1000+ price tag. That's a ridiculous amount to charge for what amounts to an extra-tiny netbook. You could buy two or three Asus or HP machines for the cost of the P, and you wouldn't lose out any on performance. Thanks to the FCC, we now know that there's a new Vaio P coming to the United States. There is no details about what's new with it, but some suspect that it is an update similar to what is currently available in Japan: a Vaio P at 2Ghz and a 256GB SSD (The Vaip P VGN-P91).
Honestly, I'd like more battery life rather than more SSD storage, but maybe it's just me. The Vaio P is very cute and I'm sure that it could survive being a little thicker. Carrying the “power brick” around just kills the experience of having a miniature computer.
