Panasonic Announces Sexy, Pointless Portable Blu-ray Player

LAS VEGAS -- Take a look at the photograph above and wonder, for a moment, just why Panasonic might release a tiny Blu-ray player with a built-in screen. But that's just what it did at CES 2009 today.
Consider the case: The DMP-B15 has a netbook sized screen (8.9") with WSVGA resolution (pretty much the same as a netbook). It has an Ethernet port to use Panasonic's walled garden Internet content service, Vieracast, and a rather poor three hour battery life (just like a netbook!)
Of course, it has a Blu-ray drive in there, but why on Earth would you want that? At this size a DVD rip would be sufficient. The only advantage we see is that there is an HDMI out, meaning it'll work as a standalone Blu-ray player when hooked up ...

Panasonic world’s first DMP-B15 portable Blu-ray Disc player has been announced at CES 09. Set to available in May, the player can playback a video content from Blu-ray and DVD discs that can views on a 8.9-inch WSVGA screen, and does BD-Live and VIERA CAST internet supported which ability to access the contents from Amazon Video-on-Demand and YouTube that including Google Picasa Web Album, Bloomberg and a weather channel. Panasonic has just released information on the upcoming release of the DMP-B15, the world’s first portable Blu-ray disc player. Included with the DMP-B15 will be almost a nine inch LCD screen, Internet access and a SD memory card slot. The only catch is that don’t expect to get the DMP-B15 for a steal; currently the player is priced at $799.95.
