Peek Handheld: No Phone, No Frills, Just Email [Handhelds]
Gizmodo —
... The bottom line is that email services on consumer phones are getting better all the time, and you can still pick up a phone like the Blackberry Pearl with email at a value that makes wasting money on a second gadget like the Peek unnecessary—even if the service is stellar. So, what do you think—does the Peek stand a chance? [Peek via ...

Peek emailer sneaks onto the market
T3.com All —
... the $15 monthly data charge from T-Mobile does drive up the overall cost. Choice of colours too, should you want to be fashion conscious in rush hour. But one outstanding question remains. Are there really any email addicts who don't have a mobile phone with email access? No doubt Peek will find out after its September 14th launch, with a UK launch certain to follow if all goes well. Or you could just trade in your old phone for a BlackBerry, which seems altogether more sensible. Peek (via ...

... gimped feature set, but I like the purity of devices that do only one thing, and do it well. The Peek could be the perfect solution to give to that elderly grandparent so they can stay in touch.
But even more promising: what if the Peek is hackable? What if someone figures out how to get a browser working on its OS? That could make the Peek very attractive to those who don't need a Smartphone but want remedial, always-on internet access no matter where they go.

Every so often a product comes down the pipe that makes you sit back and say “huh??”. Just such an item is the Peek. Complete specs on this device are not available yet but what we know is that it is a small, thin phone-like device with a good sized squarish color screen (not a touch screen) and a QWERTY keyboard, and it receives email via T-Mobiles network.
That’s it…just mail. Via Exchange Server, Gmail, Yahoo mail, what have you…mail. Ya know, the kind you read. Words, words, words…just words.

When the Peek was first announced we admit to scratching our heads a bit at the thought of a handheld email device. While that sounds like a smartphone the Peek is not, it just does email. We are not the target audience, the non-techies who are hankering to get started in the world of mobile email are the folks that Peek is aimed at. This little gadget may be what they need according to a hands-on look by Laptop Magazine. The Peek will be sold at Target stores and according to the reviewer is drop-dead easy to set up and ...

TIRED The Peek does e-mail, period, so no matter how efficient it may be, it lacks a lot of stuff that the modern consumer has come to expect from devices of this size and shape. It could also use a stylus to make navigating the tiny keyboard less of a chore.

New device lets you Peek at email... but nothing more
Popgadget: Personal Tech for Women —
Geeksugar has posted a review of a new email-only device called The Peek, which will be available at Target for $99 this fall.
At first I wasn't sure I was interested in a gadget that only handles email: smart phones offer much more, and the latest laptops are so little you can stash one in all but the smallest of purses. Plus, the Peek's keys seem kinda petite...
But it might be a nice touch for the non-tech obsessive, who doesn't want the hassle or expense of a smart phone contract and has a desktop that works just fine (I realise that's ...
Poking at the Peek: an e-mail only device
jkOnTheRun —
FedEx just made a return trip to my home office today. This time it was to drop off a Peek, the handheld device that simply does e-mail. The Peek is scheduled to appear at Target stores nationwide in a few short weeks: September 15th is the expected date. Retail price should be $99.95 and the monthly service is another $19.95 per month.
Peek is leveraging T-Mobiles EDGE network for the service which should be perfectly fine for e-mail only but I'll be trying the device for a month or so. Currently I use my iPhone for two e-mail accounts: one personal and one business. For testing, ...

... affordable, and it “just works.” Now Peek needs to see if enough people actually want the device. There probably won’t be any middle ground, either. It’ll to be this year’s Furby or collapse on itself like a dying star.
Actually, lowering the monthly fee to $14.99 or $9.99 might work wonders. We’ll see, though. It’s still early and the holidays are right around the corner. All in all, the Peek is a thoughtful, “just works” device that’ll hopefully find a niche somewhere.
