However, there will still be a need for long-term archival storage. Perhaps that's where Pioneer's projected 1TB optical drive will be welcomed in 2013. Unless, of course, someone figures out a better way to store data for centuries by then. Five years is a long time — there could be a whole new way to store data by then.

The Pioneer 16-layer 400GB optical disc was on show at the IT Month fair in Taipei, and it certainly got people talking. There are no details as to when the new 16 layer 400 GB Blu-ray disc will be launched, but once it does Pioneer’s rival will be looking to better them.

Storage is getting bigger, better and badder. Pioneer is showing a 16-layer 400GB Blu-ray read only optical disc at an ongoing fair in Taipei.
Each layer of the disc will have a 25GB capacity. The company has already shown a 16-layer Blu-ray disc player in the past and has said these latest discs will be compatible will all existing Blu-ray players.
Pioneer plans to have these read-only discs available by 2010, rewritable discs between 2010 and 2012 and a 1 TB disc in 2013.

We reported in a post yesterday that Pioneer were working on a 400GB Blu-ray disc, and that it will be compatible with all Blu-rays players. We forgot to mention that it will also work on your Sony PS3, makes sense as Sony are the ones who developed the Blu-ray format.
Pioneer showed the world the new 16-layer Blu-ray discs earlier this year, but the new discs will not likely be consumer ready until 2010, not that far off then. The idea of having a disc that could hold so much data certainly gets us thinking of the possibilities.
