Spring Design Alex comes out to play and show off Marvell's Armada chip

Spring Design's Alex as a way of showing off their new Armada chip, which claims a faster three frames per second refresh rate along with the usual assorted reductions in cost and power consumption. Maximum PC got the opportunity to see the Alex first-hand at the meeting, and note that while it's definitely thicker than the kindle (blame goes to the larger battery and second screen, naturally), it's a smart little device. ... Now to be fair, the Alex only has a frame rate of 3 FPS. But when you compare it to other readers, that have a rate of (generally) 0 FPS, you’re talking a significant improvement. This will allow the Alex to show simple animation, and other types of moving data. The Alex also sports dual screens, a 6 inch reader screen and a smaller touch capable screen mounted below. ... off when not used. Having web browsing available on the smaller colour screen also gives a better experience as it’s full colour and renders a lot quicker than the 3 frame per second speeds on the e-paper.
The small screen is also capacitive and can make use of the majority of Android’s features such as being able to show photo galleries, video and use an on-screen keyboard for text entry.

Using its built-in 3G modem or Wi-Fi, the Alex will let you visit a web site, select a story, and the device will reflow it to the EPD screen.

Could we be seeing e-reader this size for that cheap within just months? We wouldn’t expect Wi-Fi and 3G support to come as standard at that price point, but we’re getting more excited than ever to see what Cool-er and co have to show at CES in 2010 now.
