SmartBolts - A little stress never hurt anyone
The Red Ferret Journal - gadgets, cool sites, freeware and tech trivia —
Image We’re going a bit specialised here on Red Ferret today, but I think you’ll cope. These are SmartBolts , they tell you when they’ve been tightened sufficiently and when they haven’t. The little coloured dot on the head changes colour as the bolt is tightened, red for undone, black for correctly tightened. The visualiser works by compressing a small compartment filled with fluid so there are no moving parts and the bolts will last +20 years. Image There’s also a high resolution version will show you when the bolt has been over tightened and bolts can be manufactured in M10 ...

... when your good to move on to the next bolt.
The representation is done with the use of a small coloured dot on the end of the bolt. When tightening the dot changes from bright red (meaning undone) and then goes black once the bolt is correctly tightened. It works by utilising a small compartment that is filled with a fluid and squashed with pressure.
These bolts are made in M10 to M32 sizes (if that means anything to you) and are ready to use out of the box.

... take friction into account. The friction depends on bolt, nut, washer-material, plating, surface smoothness, machining accuracy, degree of lubrication and the number of times a bolt has been tightened. Fastener manufacturers often provide information for determining torque requirements for tightening various bolts, accounting for friction and other effects. However, in field applications, this information is often not available, practical or administered poorly.

... and turns more black as you tighten it. There's a more-precise version that goes from yellow to green when 90% tight, turning black at 100%.
This is a useful invention, showing you the actual tightness of a bolt rather than relying on a torque wrench's measurements, which can be off by as much as 30%. Plus, you can tell if you're just too much of a wimp to tighten that bolt the whole way. Reassuring stuff. Now we need Phillips-head screws that can do this trick, too.

... controlled by adjusting the composition of the indicator fluid and the mechanical arrangement of the different grades. Apart from sensitivity considerations, the operating concept is similar for all grades: when the tensile load is applied to the fastener, the relative deflection is mechanically coupled to the microindicator and the reflected brightness or color of the indicator will exhibit a dramatic and sensitive change as a direct function of bolt tension.
