According to The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Microsoft first discovered the problem in September or October of 2005, and it even went so far as to send a "team of engineers" to stores across the US to determine the best course of action. ...

Did Microsoft Know That the Xbox 360 Could Scratch Discs Before They Went On Sale?
Technology - Channel Feed — ... Now, in the process of the court hearings, documents have revealed that Microsoft “discovered its Xbox 360 could scratch discs before it went on sale in 2005, and even got as far as considering three possible solutions to the problem.”  The first was to improve the magnets that are used to hold the disc in place.  The second option was to slow the rotational speed of the discs and the third possible solution would have been to install “rubber bumpers to cushion the discs.”  Those bumpers would have cost $0.50 and they didn’t do it.  That’s really dumb. ...
