I like the fact that SOMEONE from Target was thoughtful enough to think that a simple gift card (no matter the amount) is not very grand but if you made it into a disposable camera, it becomes interesting. ... easy to get all sniffy about the specs of Target's new digicam gift cards — 1.2 megapixels? 8MBs of onboard memory? The eyeroll of disdain underlined with a wipe of a mucousy nose with the back of the sleeve — but they're still awesome. A gift card is an inherently tacky and thoughtless gift, but the ability to load photographs of yourself or loved ones before shoving one into a Christmas stocking is a great, humanizing touch.

... Sure, this thing isn’t exactly a Digital Rebel or anything, but getting a free 1.2-megapixel in your gift card worth $50 or more is pretty sweet. You’ll be able to store up to 50 pictures on its 8MB of memory, and it comes with a USB cable and the drivers you’ll need to download your snapshots. Heck, Target is even throwing in 40 free prints. All of that, and it still won’t cost you any more than the value of the gift card.

... or at least the idea of it. Although a gift card is probably the best bet to make sure Granny doesn't buy you a fishing net and a book instead of that, erm, netbook you asked her for, unwrapping one is unarguably dull. Adding a meta-gift to the mix really makes sense. Bonus: Turn it on its side and the front panels looks like a scary metal version of Edvard Munch's scream with added evil, glowing eyes. They really thought of everything.
