Toshiba have unveiled the storage industry’s first 512GB SSD, which uses 43nm MLC NAND memory to fit into a standard 2.5-inch drive casing. The drive - along with a range of other high-performance SSDs from the company - will begin sampling in Q1 2009, with mass production expected in Q2.
Toshiba have also announced 64GB, 128GB and 256GB SSDs, available in 1.8-inch and 2.5-inch sizes. These use the same memory type as the 512GB model, with a 3Gbps SATA-II connection, maximum read speed of 240Mbps and maximum write speed of 200Mbps. Toshiba launched the world’s first 2.5-inch 512GB SSD drive today. They also kicked out 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB drives and they’re all based on a 43 nanometer Multi-Level Cell NAND. Don’t expect them until Q2 or Q3 of 2009, but Tosh will be showing them off at CES 2009.

Each year I that attend CES, I can’t help but swing by the huge HDTVs and see the new “world’s biggest” set. It’s a status symbol of course, but this year might be the first time I focus more on the “world’s biggest” Solid State Disk capacity. For that I’ll be hitting up Toshiba’s booth for sure as they’ve pre-announced their 512GB unit that will be showcased at CES.
Manufacturing samples won’t be doled out until the first quarter of the year and Toshiba says that actual shipping products won’t appear for a few months after that. The new drives take advantage of 43nm Multi-Level Cell flash ...

Toshiba announced the expansion of their line up of NAND-flash-based solid state drives (SSD) with the industry’s first 2.5-inch 512-gigabyte (GB)(1) SSD and a broad family of fast read/write SSDs based on 43 nanometer (nm) Multi-Level Cell NAND. The new drives provide a high level of performance and endurance for use in notebook computers, gaming and home entertainment systems, and will be showcased at International CES 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada from January 8 - 11, 2009.
