Utah researchers suggest OLED efficiency not so hot
[Image credit: University of Utah] The LEDs you see in use all over these days — in traffic lights, flashlights, and all over your computer — are able to convert somewhere between 50 and 70 percent of the energy passed to them into light. This high efficiency makes them ideal for those purposes mentioned, but high costs have prevented them from replacing other types of ...

Utah Researchers Throw Cold Water On Rosy OLED Efficiency Rates [Dim Bulb]
Gizmodo — ... percentages and efficiency might be moot, especially considering OLEDs main purpose will be to replace LCD screens, not illuminate rooms or serve as the running lights on an Audi A5. OLEDs are also a superior light source for flexible materials, so there's that, too. They just won't be lighting up any kitchens or anything like that anytime soon. To summarize, the future appears bright—for both LEDs and OLEDs. To each their own, we suppose. [NewsWise via CrunchGear] ...

OLEDs not so efficient
SlashGear — ... OLEDs only have a theoretical efficiency of 25%. That’s a significant downfall, and while better than fluorescents, it loses some of its efficient luster. Though the hope that OLEDs would squash LEDs—and thus replace traditional lighting—is now gone, it’s apparent that both LED forms will be put into use. After all, they both have different features that are required for different situations. But I guess we’ll have to look for energy efficiency from somewhere else. [via CrunchGear] ...
