Wired.com's iPhone 3G Survey Reveals Network Weaknesses
Wired.com's survey of iPhone 3G users' suggests that widespread data speed problems have more to do with carriers' networks than with Apple's handsets. Wired Magazine iPhone 3G survey suggests network performance as primary cause of angst
Gear Diary — ... strong indicator that performance of the mobile carrier’s network is affecting the iPhone 3G more than the handset itself. This also furthers our thesis that it’s highly unlikely that Apple is going to wave a magical wand and say, “3G problems, be gone,” with a software update. Before Apple can make such a claim, it needs to wait for all of its carriers to optimize 3G network behavior — in terms of number of towers, how they’re positioned and how much bandwidth each tower can handle. Wired Survey: iPhone 3G Issues Might Be the Network After all [IPhone 3G]
Gizmodo — The results from Wired's worldwide—and yes, unscientific—survey of iPhone 3G download speeds are in (though the map seems to be down): It's the network. Well, at least, the iPhone's 3G issues aren't simply a hardware problem, as a bunch of mad scientist Swedes vetted this morning. Germany and the Netherlands, which have a solid, mature 3G infrastructure, report the fastest 3G speeds—2Mbps on average. In the US the picture is not so pretty, confirming the steady flood of irate yupsters yapping over the last few weeks. In ...

iPhone 3G Slowness Traced to Network - Not Hardware
Today @ PC World — ... may have more to do with the network and less with the phone itself, according to two different studies. The results of Wired's 3G data speed survey indicate that network speed varies depending on where you are. For example, Australia has the worst overall 3G performance, while Germany and The Netherlands are on the other end of the spectrum. Wired also found that, "In some major metropolitan areas that are supposedly 3G-rich, 3G performance can be very slow. For example, zooming in on San Francisco, you'll see that 10 out of 30 participants reported very slow 3G speeds -- ...

Study points to network weakness as source of iPhone 3G woes
AppleInsider — ... Published: 04:00 PM EST The results of an informal study of iPhone 3G users worldwide are in, and they suggest that problems with 3G networks -- not the iPhone's hardware -- are the source of a growing number of complaints about poor reception and download speeds. Commissioned by Wired nearly two weeks ago, the study sought the voluntary participation of iPhone 3G users around the world to test their iPhone's network connection at ...

Wired’s iPhone 3G data speed survey shows wireless networks as weak point
IntoMobile - Cell Phone News, Information, and Analysis — ... The latest data from Wired’s global iPhone 3G data speed survey allows for some interesting interpretation. The data shows that the iPhone 3G sees the highest wireless data speeds in countries with fully-mature 3G infrastructure capable of serving up 3G data at faster-than-US speeds. On the downside, the data also shows that the US wireless infrastructure is likely to blame for our iPhone 3G’s data sluggishness. ...
