... chamber as vapor. There, it reacts to form hydrogen, which fills the chamber and pushes the membrane upwards, blocking the flow of water. The hydrogen is then gradually depleted, though, as it reacts at the electrodes beneath the chamber to create electricity.
The fuel cell generates 0.7 volts and a current of 0.1 milliamps for 30 hours before it runs out of fuel, but the engineers say the latest designs give currents of around 1 milliamp at a similar voltage.

... which is pretty long given the size of the cell. You can imagine that 0.7 volts and 0.1 milliamp current are not enough to power any gadget of yours, but of course, this mini-cell is just a step in development. However, the technology is good for mobile electronics such as smartphones because it does not use gravity to control the flow of water. Instead, it’s surface tension - and it also works when the device is moving. Find out more about the smallest fuel cell in the world on newscientist.com .

... that are attached to them to provide them with power. Instead of needing heavy power supplies for small electronics components, this type of very small fuel cell may play a role in providing the necessary power for tiny distributed electronics applications in the future. And, developments in these systems may also lead to new developments in fuel cell power systems to replace batteries in consumer electronics devices such as portable phones and laptop computers.
