Even if it's packaged as yet another Guitar Hero clone, it's always nice to see multitouch appear where it wasn't meant to. The Nokia 5800 is the latest device to cave to multi-finger temptations. Developer Jamie Fuller somehow managed to coax the 5800 XpressMusic's resistive display to recognize multiple touch points at once, showing off the results in a simple rhythm game. It doesn't look like he's pulled off a full multi-point tracking, so the pinch zooming and two finger rotation that we all associate with most multitouch tech isn't seen here. But still! Multitouch! What would make Nokia (NYSE: NOK)’s first S60-powered (S60 5th Edition, that is) touchscreen handset better than it already is? Well, for starters, we’d love to see the US fleet of Nokia 5800 XpressMusic handsets actually working with 3G frequencies in the US. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait for Nokia to get the bugs worked out on that end. On the other hand, the 5800 XM could put its touchscreen to even better use with some finger-lovin’ multi-touch support. And, it turns out that imaginative hackers have already started down the road to a multi-touch enabled Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

With the multitouch patent very much in Apple’s hands, most of the companies have stayed away to integrate multitouch in their phones. This has led developers to take the task in their own hands. Jamie Fuller, an S60 developer has announced his new project of bringing multitouch to Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic phone. His proof of concept is a game, much like Guitar Hero which he plans to release for free in the future after he sorts out the graphic issues. Till then, enjoy the video below.
