Cool IPhone Animation Creates 3D Illusion
Wired: Gadget Lab —
David OReilly has taken iPhone-app coding beyond what was imaginable by
creating a 3D hologram that appears to jump off the handset's screen.
The animation assumes a 35- to 45-degree viewing angle, so with the
iPhone placed on a desktop, the 3D scene appears to be jumping out. And
then you can rotate the phone and the animation will follow your
perspective like a real 3D object.
OReilly said he uses a method called anamorphosis to create the 3D
perspective -- the same technique used in Hans Halbein's painting The
Ambassadors -- only the ...
3D App Converts iPhone into Window to Alternative World [Magic]
Gizmodo —
If you liked Johnny Chung Lee's Wii headtracking tricks you will love iHologram, an stunning iPhone app that makes the screen look like a window to a real, parallel dimension. While it seems like magic, it uses anamorphosis, a very simple painting technique that has been used by old masters since the 15th century, mixed with the technology in the JesusPhone. Created by David OReilly, iHologram combines anamorphosis and the iPhone's gyroscopes to achieve this awesome visual magic trick. Anamorphosis is a way to draw things distorted so, while watched at a certain angle, they pop out of the ...
iHologram Resembles An Actual Hologram
GEARFUSE —
We just can’t get enough of the goodies that keep showing up in the iPhone App Store. The latest rumored application is the iHologram by David O’Reilly. It creates a holographic-like effect on the iPhone by performing real time adjustments to the image based on rotation, similar to the fake beer app . Seems pretty cool, huh? You’ll be disappointed to know it’s a fake. Yea, It turns out that the iHologram is faker than Steve Fosset’s death . Actually, we’re still not so sure about that one.“The iHologram app was not real. It was an illustration of an idea I had which I believe could work with the technology (combining anamorphosis ...

iHologram - iPhone application from David OReilly on Vimeo
Here's an iPhone App that made the cut - the iHologram. It works with both the iPod touch and iPhone, offering graphics that seem to leap off the display in the manner 3D hologram stickers do. According to designer David O'Reilly, "The application works by assuming a constant viewing angle (35-45 degrees), typical for when the device is placed on a tabletop. The 3D scene’s perspective is warped using anamorphosis, the same technique used in Hans Holbein’s painting The Ambassadors. This application does the exact same but ...
iPhone Hologram App: Total Nonsense, but still awesome
Boing Boing Gadgets —
Okay, first off, this is bullshit: the iPhone's motion sensor is not this sophisticated. And my smug satisfaction at having predicted that will have to be believed over proven: I swear, I knew it was crap even before I googled up this "developer" blog post about the scam.
That all said: boy, isn't this neat? If it were real, it would be an excellent test bed for the next Viewtiful Joe game, to be sure.
