iRiver Spinn Controller and UI Caught on VIdeo: Sleek, But Confusing [Spinn]

We've talked a few times about iRiver's Spinn PMP with its revolutionary controller, and now its UI has been captured on camera. Check out the radio-dial-like menu selection system, which looks pretty sleek and shiny. You dial through/click the menus with the feature wheel on the unit. Or by jabbing at the touchscreen. Hmm.... so the purpose of the big wheel is as an additional control that doesn't offer the flexibility of touchscreen controls? It's a little confusing: as is the UI itself, to my eyes at least. We already knew iRiver’s SPINN PMP looked great from the outside, but thanks to this YouTube video we now know that they’ve done some good work with the GUI too. Primary control is shared between the tactile-looking dial (that gives the PMP its name) and the touchscreen, which has haptic feedback.
Although scroll-wheel interfaces aren’t new, it’s moderately unusual to find one in a PMP that’s coupled with a touchscreen. The benefit is quicker control both in and out of pockets.

I don’t know too much, but nor do I follow the MP3 market that closely. The Spinn will come in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB sizes, ship with Bluetooth and a dedicated 3D acceleration chip of some sort. Expect it to hit the retail market this month.

At CES last January, I dropped by the iriver booth to see some of their newest products. That is where I first saw the Spinn MP4 Player, and when I say saw, I mean, just saw. They did not give me the opportunity to try it out, even though they were very excited about one of their latest portable media players. It was completely under glass, and I had doubts whether the model even worked.
